TPO Surface and Grain Distortion in Thermoforming

Prevent loss, stretching, gloss shift, whitening, and uneven replication of textured TPO sheet during automotive and industrial thermoforming.

Textured thermoplastic polyolefin sheet can show grain stretch, gloss differences, whitening, or local flattening after forming. The visible result depends on surface construction, pigmentation, temperature profile, draw direction, tool texture, and local strain.

The sheet grain should be documented before forming and compared with wall-thickness and strain distribution. Distortion concentrated in deep walls indicates excessive local stretch; a broad gloss shift may indicate surface overheating or tool contact conditions. Different TPO grades cannot be assumed to share the same surface window.

Pre-stretch, plug assistance, local heating, radii, and material orientation should distribute strain away from appearance-critical zones. Tool temperature and finish must support consistent contact. Process approval should use the production grain and color because visual behavior can change with the surface formulation.
